That is, for a single, educated white-collar professional male looking to meet single, educated white-collar professional women?

I checked out JAX and was given the big "thumbs down" for singles, though it is kind of a neat town in some regards. What about in Hampton Roads, given that there is a military presence?

I was single for 4 years divorced before meeting my current husband in Newport News. I know many married couples who have all met here in the Hampton Roads area and many of them went to school together.

I actually met my husband at a bar! So, to answer your question, the single life here is as it would be anywhere. It's a hit and miss kind of thing and for some it works out well. We have also had friends never have a relationship here in Hampton Roads, move to Texas and hop right into one! But, there are plenty of singles and there is plenty of night life!

There are lots of opportunities for mingling in Hampton Roads. Beach you have the new Town Center area. Shore Drive in Va. Beach has its own local single scene too! Yes since the town is full of young military types you may actually find yourself in a better position since you are not one! Be sure to check out the local business rag: I found it helped me back in '99 when I moved here from NYC. Originally Posted by LibertyCedar.

In the summer months you can enjoy many, many terrific festivals: If you are the type of person who enjoys these experiences then this area has a bunch to offer.

Another bonus for someone who likes to travel, like me… you have both Norfolk and Newport News to fly out of. Norfolk has great Southwest deals and Newport News has Airtran. Since anyplace worth living has traffic — the only downside I see to Hampton Roads is the salaries for professionals with 4 year degrees seems to be less then other East Coast metro areas.

Thought I would share my opinion on robertpolyglots question from a guy's perspective. First off, Virginia Beach has the highest percentage of single guys in the country or it used to at least and I am still sure it is near the top. Translation, as a single guy coming into this area, the ratios are already horrible. I am guessing this is due to the large military presence. Going to any type of nightlife area or single's type hangout will easily prove this point.

For example, go to a place like Waterside in Norfolk and the only women you will see are usually a. All joking aside, I know your goal is to meet a single, educated white-collar professional women which you will probably not do in a bar.

There are definitely those types of women out there as this is a large area, but the single ones are few and far between and those women will have tons of other options, making it difficult to find one that is not already in a relationship. I have also found that in general the single women here tend to be and I mean this in the nicest possilble way sort of stuck up and unfriendly in comparison to other cities.

Again, I am not saying all are, there are surely some nice ones out there. But women in other cities I have been to are much more friendly and willing to meet new guys. I guess when the ratios are so much in their favor they get used to being able to get what they want and can be a little cocky. As far as places to go as a single person, there are some options like the beach, Waterside, downtown Virgina Beach Town Center.

Ignoring the lack of women issue, these places can be fun, but again in comparison to other cities are nothing special. So in short, I personally would stay away from the Hampton Roads area if I were single, far, far away. You may come here and like it and find that special someone your first month. But if you have the option to move anywhere you want, I would try other cities. I am not sure what you look for in a city, but as far as single, professional women a city like Charlotte, Raleigh, Atlanta, or Denver I have found to be a much more friendly atmosphere for meeting someone.

In the end, the best way to get a feel for an area is by visiting it for a week and seeing what things are really like. It obviously won't tell you everything, but you can get a feel for if a place would be a good fit for you or not. Let me know if I can answer any other questions you may have.
