But Jeremy Allen White just nailed this episode. That was one of the best performances I've seen by a single actor in a TV series this year. Think about how difficult this performance was.

He had to act on such an unbelievably wide array of emotions. This wasn't just nailing a scene, or a line. This was having to work through some incredibly complex emotions without the benefit of easy exposition. Amazing examples throughout, but that scene in which he got his essay back, and smiled before remembering the current circumstances I love the "is everyone's family this fucked up? Well, passing of the beer.

Carl isn't just instant levity or shenanigans anymore, although he still brings that of course. He understands the stakes more, is a real player in the Gallagher world. We've all been the Mike to someone's Fiona, right?

It's not just me? Someone destroys you, and you would still be the only one to bail them out of jail. The Sheila storyline this season has been really clumsy, I'm sure we'd all admit.

And this episode was no different. But I'm game for just getting Sheila out of the house. I don't know if it's a send-off, or getting her into a new setting. I love Sheila, and re-watching the series has confirmed this for me, but she just need a purpose, or generally to not detract from more valuable storylines. If it's a send-off that trades off for better storylines, I'm good with that. I hope Matty is a fixture going forward, because there are a lot of interesting things to explore there.

Poor Lip, in that sense. How many things can be on one guy's mind at once? College, his brother's near-death experience, his sister's arrest, his father's absenteeism and looming death, finding out his sister is dating someone older than him.

The Chucky-watching-porn scene was vintage Shameless -- a rare moment of that odd levity that is increasingly rare this series -- but it still made me uncomfortable. As I said, I'm re-watching this series right now, halfway through season two, and watching the first two seasons while watching the fourth season is almost like watching two different series entirely. This season has been really, really dark and serious, and not just the last two episodes.

I'm not saying that's a bad thing. If anything, it's a twisted payoff of sorts, the culmination of growing to care about a very fucked-up family. Extreme tonal shift, but I think it makes sense, it's a natural progression, and it's a smart double-down on the audience genuinely giving a shit about these characters. What's up with Mandy and big black dude boyfriend?

I thought she would have kicked him to the curb after the other week This season feels like it's building toward a really, really significant moment at its conclusion.

The obvious pick is Frank's death. The somewhat-less-obvious pick is Fiona actually being found guilty could this show exist without Rossum, though? So I'm wondering if it's something that fits in there. Part of me hopes there is a victorious note of some sort, maybe a grand send-off for Frank. If this season ends on a down note, it would be pretty crushing given how serious it's already been throughout. I don't think they are struggling to write her. It's a little clumsy, yes, but the reason she's spending so much time with the Gallaghers and now with Roger Running Tree and his family is because she is so lonely.

The Gallaghers not having a better legal guardian than Frank has been a great plot device quite a few times over the years IMHO. And as fucked-up as everyone else's behavior is, Sheila is one of the least mentally stable people on the show - everyone else is at least self-aware and knows their place in the world, she is kind and generous but is clearly suffering from many different psychoses.

You can trust her to keep an impeccably clean house and make you some nice pancakes, but if you are facing a real tough decision she's the last one I want in charge. A quick comment about your 3: While I'm not saying that's going to happen here, I do see those early signs. He's interested in girls, his childish mischief is giving way to hormones, and he's starting to care about real issues between him and Frank and the rest of the family.

I mean, he's the only one that knew all about Sami and the whole sweat lodge thing. That being said, I hear the UK series is far, far, far different. So I doubt the show's writers are following much of it at this point. But yeah, Carl has been committing some pretty serious crimes for a long time without any repurcussions.

And while everyone is talking about Liam being neglected, look at Carl! The kids spends most of his time stealing drugs for his dying father. Carl seems like he's gone from petty crime to crime for the family which is what Lip and Ian have been doing for the entire series. He's become more a Gallagher for the Gallaghers as he's matured.

Yeah, but then he'll randomly do something like set fire to the sweat-lodge. I understand WHY he did it, but it was with such abandon. And he enjoyed it. Bad signs for the kid. He'll do far worse when he gets older. This season has been incredible as far as acting and writing, but everyone feels so broken. I miss the powerful Gallagers who met challenges and kicked ass. These kids are just getting hammered left and right, and they don't even have each other to lean on anymore.

Where is the Fiona that petitioned to be the guardian of her siblings? Or the Debbie would was more interested in drowning the popular girls than taking their shitty advice? I'm riveted, and this season proves that the show is incredible tv. But it's not the show that I started watching, where they whimsy outweighed the adversity and the overarching theme was "these kids will be ok". The kids will probably be as ok as they can considering the circumstances, but IMO it's been a natural arc for such a story.

This isn't GRRM, there will be silver linings. I think the point is moreso we CARE when bad things happen to these characters.

This season is really just testing that. But I would bet anything it ends on an optimistic note. I agree with what you're saying and noticed it myself, but it doesn't surprise me at all. Plenty of shows start out as light-hearted fun but turn serious as you start to care about the characters on an emotional level.

I'd even argue that it's the most common way for a multi-season show to evolve - you almost have to give a show some real depth after a few seasons or it just starts to feel hollow. Cutting toxic people out of my life is something I learned to do at like 15 and before then I wasn't in any place to bail anyone out of jail.

It would certainly suffer for it but, after these past few episodes, I don't think it would suffer as much as I would have guessed after any of the earlier ones. I thought this episode was very well-made, for sure. But I'm hoping it doesn't continue to go down such a dark route. For me, the show's strength is in its outrageous, shocking, humorous moments.

This was very bleak. I'm ok with it getting to this point, for plot purposes, but I'm hoping the "funny" comes back full blast. And killing Frank off would be a huge mistake.

He is so, so, so crucial. By far the show's crowning achievement. I think it'd be less of a problem to have Fiona off the show than Frank, even though that would also be a disaster.

So I'm thinking Fiona will end up giving him a liver, or it turns out that Samantha could have given him one all this time--and was just waiting to see if he "deserved" it--and he'll miraculously recover.

And yeah, I doubt they're going to put Fiona in jail. It could open up some more plots, like Fiona violating probation and going on the run. Perhaps this was foreshadowed by the scene where the Milkovich father got taken in for violating parole Yeah, probation could be a thing. It could be a good teachable moment watching Fiona lose her job due to the coke and child endangerment convictions. And we watch her become unemployable, and be unemployed for years. Or, they could give her prison time, to try to bask in some of the Orange is the New Black female prison limelight.

Nah, I don't think that'd work for this kind of show. The main plot is usually centered around Fiona, and it won't work if she's behind bars. She needs to be back with her friends and family. I do think it's almost a sure bet that she will get probation, which is oftentimes a rigid trap that will make sure that she has a job, while also almost totally disqualified from most jobs, including fast food.

See, I think if Frank miraculously recovers, this season will feel really, really cheap in retrospect. Instead of the season that's proved worth my caring. Yeah, but the writers put themselves in a really tight bind by making one of the main characters deathly ill.

It'd be cheap if he survived but really threaten the future of the show if he dies. It's hard to find a balance. Maybe give him a liver and keep him sick, just not "you have a month to live" sick. I'm glad they are showing Fiona so traumatized by her arrest, because frankly she deserves it for being so careless. Her mistake didn't just harm Liam, but she is putting Lip in a difficult position to be able to keep his scholarship and he truly is the best hope they have to pull the family out of squallor.

Every time they show Fiona on screen I feel intensely angry at her, so I don't blame Lip for not giving her a pass. I really hope Sheila lives happily ever after on the reservation with her new boyfriend.

She deserves to find some joy, and her joy is obviously being a mom. Frank's hospice scenes and his realization that he does not have as much time as he thinks were well done. I do feel bad for him, even when he is saying all the wrong things to his "new" daughter. He wouldn't be Frank if he wasn't an asshole to all his kids!

I don't know why Fiona didn't rat Robbie out, yeah I read someone say it's some code she adheres to but fuck, he really did a number on her this season, I see no reason why she wouldn't gladly give his name. That bit surprised me.. Because fucking with Robbie means fucking with Mike and the rest of their family. I think she made the right choice to not get involved in that, she feels bad enough for what she's done already.

Plus she has her job to look out for, if she is somehow still employed after everything. But maybe if she tells Mike it was Robbie's coke she'd gain his sympathy, and he'd allow her to keep her job despite the charges?

He's pretty pissed at her now, but maybe once he sees how the "addict behavior" affected her decisions, he might come to some level of forgiveness. Just a wildcard prediction. This was my thought as well, she didn't want to drag Mike into it. As much as he seemed to hate his brother sometimes no doubt he still loves him and would side with him. Whether Mike loves his brother or not, it would inevitably become his problem, even if indirectly. The last thing she would want is to fuck with him in any way after everything that went down.

But wouldn't it have been a crazy twist of irony if she had ratted Robbie out and then Mike comes to bail her out? I think it makes sense that Fiona didn't rat her out. While it's true that it wouldn't have happened if he didn't drop off the bag of coke, it was still ultimately her fault. She can claim partial blame, but the majority is hers. Yeah I know, she had perfect opportunity in prison.

I agree with her "don't rat" mentality. BUT, if someone left a bag of coke at my house, and my infant little brother got into the bag of coke, almost died, and I get booked for it I'm snitching that mother fucker out right away, and as soon as I get out, I'm going to find him to beat the shit out of him. So we're blaming Robbie now? It's not like he poisoned Liam or hid the coke somewhere in the house without Fiona knowing.

He's not really responsible for making sure the house is childproof - but the legal guardian of the children sure as hell is. Was anyone else stunned that Mike was out front of the jail instead of Robbie? I was so sure he was going to be the one to come in and "save" Fiona and thus make her indebted to him and lead her back into his world of addiction.

This season has turned what was a contender for my top 5 shows of all time firmly into the number one spot.

They've done amazing character development for all of the characters and I find myself attached to even the small characters. Also, does anyone else see Frank's manipulative charismatic side in Samantha? They showed it in this episode - she's trying to get him to look at hospice and then she brings up her mother at that exact moment.

She uses it as a bargaining chip. If you watch her face when Frank relents, she gives a small triumphant smile and then firms up before turning back toward Frank. Yeah, I'm hoping Sammie turns rotten like that. It'd be a better twist than just having her betrayed by Frank like everyone else in the family. I thought it might have been Mandy bailing her out. After she heard what happened, and with her dad out of the way, the Milkovich family does seem like the type to have a stash of dirty money somewhere.

I honestly think if it was Robbie, that Fiona would've just walked away on her own. Right or wrong, once Fiona stops blaming herself, she's going to blame Robbie for what happened. As for Sami's manipulation, I don't see it going that far, but she is learning how to push Frank's buttons. The scene where Frank was in the hospital and the doctor Dr. Zabel was talking to him about how they go way back and Frank was dying was a nod to ER. William H Macy's character left the hospital after making a mistake and was a legend at the County hospital and Scott Grimes character was still working at the hospital when ER ended.

So by having the two of their characters meet in a county hospital in Chicago in Shameless and Dr. Zabel saying he and Frank go way back is a nod to the time they both spent on ER. I never really watched ER so I never would have picked that up.

I love it when shows do that! I don't know why this show doesn't get more acting accolades, every single one of the actors knocked this episode out of the park. And that final scene with the cuts between Fiona alone in the house and everyone else celebrating with Liam was so well done and emotional-- this season is tearing me apart.

Kind of hard to come back from something like that. I think that will be part of the season finale - letting go. I'm imagining some kind of grand send-off, Gallagher style. Everyone comes to terms with Frank in their own way, says goodbye to a bastard who still was in their lives, for better or worse.

I think Fiona will come around and agree to giving him a new liver. Fiona might go to jail and the family needs a legal guardian in order to keep Liam. Fiona will probably agree to do it just in case she has to go to prison.

I don't see them doing it. He''s the only Gallagher that stays to the end in the UK version, and it just wouldn't be Shameless without him. I could see his role becoming either more peripheral or more central once again. He's kinda been in limbo between the two lately. Seems like it is pretty inevitable at this point. The doctor straight up read him his diagnosis and said that his time is up. I'd imagine he'd be killed off either by the end of this season or next.

Or beats it in some other miraculous Gallagher way. Finding a way out of hopeless situations is one of the common themes of the show. Can somebody please explain to me what the deal is with Debbie's boyfriend? It's really bugging me. He just seems to genuinely like and care Debbie but isn't willing to do anything more because she's That's what I tell to my wife and myself, but knowing this show, something messed up is afoot. I agree, there's something going on. However, I think he's actually the good guy.

I actually think he's a victim, like perhaps he was sexually abused as a child, maybe even by his parents which would be why they're not in his live. I believe that all the characters on this show are good people just in their own unique ways even Mickey. My theory is that he's incredibly lonely, but he isn't willing to cross the line because of Debbie's age.

Did you notice the sign on his apartment door? I saw the words "shut off" on it. Could be nothing though. I really, really hope Lip doesn't drop out of college. If he does, I'd understand given how terrible things at home are, but I just want him to succeed.
