Caduceus SymbolClick here for a full Glossary of Terms

he caduceus is a key symbol in this story and in the iconography of early medical science. It is the symbol of Mercury or Hermes (messenger of the gods). Hermes intervened in a fight between two serpents (creatures of legendary transforming and healing powers) who entwined themselves around his wand. The symbol represents the one (the male, the rod) and the dual (the female, the split serpents). The caduceus shows the interconnectivity of female and male energies and worlds that are sublimated in the process of the whole in alchemy. Sanskrit describes the universal energy released by the twin snakes around the phallus (whether visible or invisible) as kundalini..
