Gravina in Puglia near Matera is very beautiful: I suggest the visit. You can see footprints maybe of raptorsaurus and the impressive sings of Saraceni invasion about years There are a few things to see in Gravinia but it is nearly impossible to find them. Otherwise a very ugly and busy town. Alta Murga National Park and Silgion in the vicinity. Fine local food, small hotels - an underexplored location. A lovely village with long history, cave churches and underground town to visit. Try the walking guided tour, it takes you to surprising and fascinating places.
Worth to spend here a day or two. My girlfriend and I stopped over here on our way from Positano to Bari. We stayed 2 nights. Learning about the history of the town was interesting, the people were super friendly and the local food was delicious. Make sure you are on the street Wonderful country full of beauty , history archeology , paintings from ancient to modern with the great collection of Fronteversismo paintings in permanent exhibition. Good food and wine.
We walked over the bridge to the ancient part where there was habitation. On the way it was fairly grubby with smashed bottles and rubbish. A shame as it could be a lot more attractive. The views from the top were very nice and there were some archaeological We visited Gravina in October and were enchanted by this cosy, Italian town. No tourists but just traditional Italian life, great restaurants and interesting history and surroundings.
Especially the gorge with the formerly inhabited rocks were well worth a visit though you shouldnot compare this The ravine and parkland is beautiful and wild, the surrounding fields, farms and forests are very beautiful and therapeutic.
Don't miss street festivals before Christmas, on 2 June and St Michael's day on The old narrow winding streets. Incredibly beautiful central square, which leads to a rocky cliff and fault.

These two wonderful place completely different. Gravina undeservedly not attend so many tourists. And it is in vain! Gravina deserves a visit. Historically, the city center comes at an incredibly scenic karst Historically, the city center comes at an incredibly scenic karst fault with many caves.
The architecture of the old town charms. I recommend you to visit both cities, if you have the time. You will enjoy this city to the fullest. TripAdvisor LLC is not responsible for content on external web sites. Taxes, fees not included for deals content. About Us Help Center./p>

He was smart to make a reservation outside, and though it was the middle of July, we were one of the few customers.
The staff was super attentive, flutes of prosecco in our hands within seconds and the menu was creative. We joked with the staff, who as always are a bit bewildered by a couple speaking a blend of languages, but also Italian. Our last morning, we leisurely got up, slowly sipping our coffee and watching the sun rise, hot already at 9am.
That day we were to drive back down south to Calabria, another reality that is so very different from the one we were experiencing right now. We checked out and dropped our things at the car, opting for a short walk to give a personal goodbye to this special little town. Antonio, website and details. Leah Travels writes about three different places in Italy not yet ruined by tour groups and includes the abandoned town of Craco, not far from Matera, a place I need to visit next! Hobbies include plenty of reading, hiking, beagle cuddles, the hunt for the 'perfect' Moscow mule and laughs with the girls. This was an amazing article, Georgette. There is so much information, resource and photos that you inspire the reader to want to go there tomorrow.
Your expressive way of sharing your 36 hours with us is really wonderful. Thank you so much Janice, the article was definitely a lot of work but I really wanted to showcase the best of the city, all while knowing I still have plenty to learn and see, obviously two days is not enough. Really liked this post. So full of useful information and lovely pictures.
Ciao Gil, thank you! I am obsessed with Matera now, its been a while since I have had such a strong feeling about an Italian city. I wish I could have been there with you! We also went to Matera for 2 days earlier this month and absolutely loved it as well. We did a spin around Puglia, Gargano peninsula, trulli, etc. Highly recommended and hope to return!
Thanks for sharing your post…wish I had see it before we went. There is just something about this city.
It is like another world from Florence and that makes it quite special. Also affordable, and I hope it stays like that.. Matera is hands down one of my now favorite spots in Italy, there really is nothing like it.. This brings back great memories of our visit to Matera in Sep For 3 days we never left Matera. Am looking for the best itinerary to enjoy a light sampler of the best of Puglia in under 2 weeks.
We've just spent 10 days in Puglia , with 4 bases, and a car, so were able to fit a lot in. The fact it wasn't high season and hot made it easier than it would be in high summer; for instance no traffic on the coast road on the Bay of Taranto side the Ionian Sea but in August it would be a very different story. Lecce is far and away the biggest town of the places you mention, and is central as a transport base. I would suggest you plan on spending more time there, and visit the other towns as day-trips mainly.
I'd say that for the others, a few hours will generally do it, especially if you aren't wanting to visit museums. We stopped off at Monopoli on the way to Bari airport and I was very taken with it, more so than eg Otranto. I booked accommodation through booking. Great insight, thanks Lynda. What were your 4 bases and where did you visit in your 10 days? Any town stand out as more lively aside from Lecce?
Who did you arrange the car rental through? Where did you pick up and drop off the car? Any hassle with parking during your trip? Hey, what did you end up planning for itinerary in Puglia? We're going this summer for at least 14 days. I'm heading to Puglia for 10 days in a few weeks and would love to know how everything went! Not sure which would be better or if there are better towns to base out of! Do you have 10 days but 8 nights? With nights I would probably spend 2 nights in Matera others may suggest longer and then one other base elsewhere such as Pogliano A Mare.
